Malaysian F1 Circuit, Sepang

You know how every curve of an F1 circuit has a name? If you don't, then let me tell you that they do indeed! Not all but mostly at least. Lol. Anyway, for Sepang Circuit, the names are depicted in the photo below.

I don't know about you, readers but I find it truly lame! And if you don't believe me, go check out the other circuits (I have an example below). Their curves are named after great drivers, car manufactures, etc. Unlike ours. Geez. Get creative already!!!

Australian circuit - Most of the curves are named after Formula One greats.

BUT don't go asking me if I know what it takes to name the curves alright? License for permission to use names, etc. Because I DON'T KNOW. And I am MERELY STATING MY OPINION here. =)

Ferrari Picked Up Its First Three Points At Sakhir

Britain's Jenson Button won the Bahrain Grand Prix on Sunday for the Formula One championship leader's third victory in four races with newcomers Brawn GP this season.

The 29-year-old's success at Sakhir dashed Toyota's hopes of a breakthrough first win after the Japanese manufacturer had started with both their cars on the front row for the first time.

Germany's Sebastian Vettel was second for Red Bull with Toyota's Italian Jarno Trulli finishing third from pole position.

Button, with four career wins, now has 31 points to Brazilian team mate Rubens Barrichello's 19 and Vettel's 18.

Champions Ferrari finally opened their account with 2007 world champion Kimi Raikkonen finishing sixth for the Italian team's first points of the year.

McLaren's world champion Lewis Hamilton, whose team could receive a heavy punishment at a hearing in Paris on Wednesday for lying to stewards at the Australian season-opener, took fourth place after an aggressive start.

Barrichello was fifth, ahead of Raikkonen, with Toyota's Timo Glock seventh and Renault's double world champion Fernando Alonso taking the final point on a hot afternoon with air temperatures around 35 degrees Celsius.

Glock, lighter on fuel than his team mate, made the quicker start and led for the first 10 laps before pitting and handing over to Trulli.

Button led for the first time in the race on lap 13, allowing Vettel and then Raikkonen to take brief turns at the front when he pitted, but was clearly in control for the final third of the race.

"We're going back to Europe with some very good points. Let's do it again in Barcelona," Button, who had started fourth, said as he took the chequered flag and punched the air in jubilation.

The Spanish Grand prix is next on May 10.

BMW-Sauber, who had hoped to be challenging for the title this season, had a dismal afternoon at the circuit that brought them their first pole position last year with Poland's Robert Kubica.

Both cars were lapped just after the halfway mark, with Kubica 18th and Germany's Nick Heidfeld the last finisher in 19th place at the chequered flag.

Williams's Japanese driver Kazuki Nakajima was the sole retirement.

And in other news, Arsenal defeated Middlesbrough 2-0 just now. I just got back from watching the match actually. Lol. Captain, Cesc Fabregas' brace helped The Gunners seal their victory over the Riverside team. Arsenal will next face holders, Manchester United, in the first leg of the UEFA Champions' League semifinal on Tuesday/Wednesday at Old Trafford. And that is probably a match I will have to miss since I am having my finals. -Sigh!!!- The other semifinal will see last season's losing finalist, Chelsea take on Barcelona.

A Wet Race In Sepang

Britain's Jenson Button splashed to victory in a chaotic, rain-shortened Malaysian Grand Prix for his second triumph in two races for the new Brawn GP team.

Half points were awarded for only the fifth time in Formula One history because only 32 of the scheduled 56 laps had been completed before a torrential downpour turned the track into a lake.
With thunderclaps and lightning streaking across the darkened Sepang skies, making driving conditions impossible even behind the safety car, the race was red-flagged and then abandoned.

Button, who had again started from pole position after a Brawn one-two in the Australian season-opener last weekend, was leading behind the safety car when officials signalled the halt.

The Briton, who also won in Melbourne with the safety car deployed, had already made four pitstops in the changing conditions and was only third at the end of the opening lap after a slow start.

"What a crazy race, it really was," said the 29-year-old after some slippery podium celebrations. "I still haven't seen the chequered flag (this season) without the safety car in front.

"It was really bad conditions, you couldn't actually see the circuit," added Button, who now has three career wins.

Germany's Nick Heidfeld (BMW-Sauber) was second for the eighth time in a so far winless career, with compatriot Timo Glock third for Toyota with the results based on the positions at the end of the 31st lap.

Italian Jarno Trulli, who was third for Toyota in Melbourne, finished fourth ahead of Brawn's Brazilian Rubens Barrichello and Red Bull's Australian Mark Webber in sixth.

McLaren's world champion Lewis Hamilton, at the centre of a furore after he and his team were found to have deliberately misled stewards in Australia, was seventh while Germany's Nico Rosberg collected half a point for Williams in eighth.

"All I could do was try and keep the car on the track," said Hamilton.

"It was the correct decision to stop the race because it was just too dangerous for everyone. I love it when it rains, but this was just too much."

Rosberg, who had warned earlier in the week that the late-starting race was likely to be halted by the weather before the scheduled twilight finish, had led the first 15 laps until he pitted.

Reigning constructors' champions Ferrari are still without a point from two races after Brazilian Felipe Massa was ninth and 2007 world champion Kimi Raikkonen 14th after he changed to full wet tyres too early and paid a heavy price.

There was confusion after the race was abandoned, with drivers awaiting the unlikely chance of a re-start while the clock ticked towards the two-hour limit and the daylight faded.

With Glock ahead of Heidfeld at the red flag, there was also uncertainty about the final podium positions.

"My engineer told me: 'You are P2 (second place)' and then I came up here and I'm P3," said a bemused Glock.

"I'm fine with second," replied Heidfeld.

The last race to be abandoned due to heavy rain was Australia in 1991 when the grand prix was halted after 14 of the 81 scheduled laps. Others have been cut short by accidents or re-started.

Brawn Wins On Their First Outing

Britain's Jenson Button produced a flawless display to win the Australian Grand Prix on the Brawn team's Formula One debut.

Button led an astonishing Brawn one-two ahead of Brazilian Rubens Barrichello in the season's opening race in Melbourne.

No Formula One team had won on their debut since Wolf in 1977 while the last to secure the top two places first time out was Mercedes in 1954.

McLaren's world champion Lewis Hamilton, who started 18th after a catastrophic gearbox failure in qualifying, showed all of his fighting spirit by clawing his way back to fourth place.

The 29-year-old Button led from pole to chequered flag at Albert Park, taking his first victory since Hungary in 2006 and scoring more points in a single afternoon than he had in the previous two seasons with Honda.

Barrichello started and finished second but only after Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel and BMW-Sauber's Robert Kubica collided three laps from the end while second and third respectively.

That brought out the safety car for the closing laps before it came in at the final corner.

Italian Jarno Trulli, who had started 19th and in the pit lane for Toyota, took third place.

Germany's Timo Glock was fifth for Toyota ahead of Renault's Fernando Alonso and Williams' Nico Rosberg. Toro Rosso's Swiss rookie Sebastien Buemi became the 58th driver to score on his debut with eighth place.

Button, written off as an overpaid has-been when Honda decided in December to pull out, completed an astonishing comeback that ensured he will never again be regarded as a one-hit wonder.

"Sensational job. Fantastic. Well done, you deserve it," team principal Ross Brawn told Button over the team radio after he crossed the line.

"Thank you, you are all legends. It's going to be a great year," replied Button.

The first race of a new-look Formula One, with radically-revised aerodynamic regulations, slick tyres and the new KERS energy recovery systems, turned the starting grid upside down and shook up the pecking order as many had predicted.

Neither of the Ferraris finished, with Felipe Massa retiring on the 46th lap and 2007 world champion Kimi Raikkonen following him out. Hamilton's Finnish team mate Heikki Kovalainen retired after being caught in a first lap coming together.

Race 1: Australian Grand Prix

The first race of the season is taking place this weekend in Melbourne, Australia. So I though I give some facts about the race.

Length: 5.303 km
Laps: 58 (307.574 Km)
Last Year Results:
1. L. Hamilton
2. N. Heidfeld
3. N. Rosberg
Record Lap: M. Schumacher - 1'24''215 (2004, Ferrari)
Record Pole: M. Schumacher - 1'24''408 (2004, Ferrari)
Last Year Pole: L. Hamilton - 1'26''714 (McLaren)

Previous winners:
2008 L.Hamilton (McLaren)
2007 K. Raikkonen (Ferrari)
2006 F. Alonso (Renault)
2005 G. Fisichella (Renault)
2004 M. Schumacher (Ferrari)
2003 D. Coulthard (McLaren)
2002 M. Schumacher (Ferrari)
2001 M. Schumacher (Ferrari)
2000 M. Schumacher (Ferrari)

From the facts above, I am sure you'd noticed that only Ferrari, Renault and McLaren has won the Australian GP since year 2000. However, after the qualifying just now, we might see a new winner emerge. Below are the qualifying results.

1. Jenson Button (Brawn)
2. Rubens Barrichello (Brawn)
3. Sebastian Vettel (Red Bull)
4. Robert Kubica (BMW)
5. Nico Rosberg (Williams)
6. Timo Glock (Toyota)
7. Felipe Massa (Ferrari)
8. Jarno Trulli (Toyota)
9. Kimi Räikkönen (Ferrari)
10. Mark Webber (Red Bull)
11. Nick Heidfeld (BMW)
12. Fernando Alonso (Renault)
13. Kazuki Nakajima (Williams)
14. Heikki Kovalainen (McLaren)
15. Lewis Hamilton (McLaren)
16. Sebastien Buemi (Toro Rosso)
17. Nelson Piquet (Renault)
18. Giancarlo Fisichella (Force India)
19. Adrian Sutil (Force India)
20. Sebastien Bourdais (Toro Rosso)

So by looking at the starting grid for tomorrow, the first supposely big name is on 4th row, Felipe Massa. And what a suprise for Brawn Racing Team. And reigning champion, Lewis Hamilton is way back at 15th position. So it is race on tomorrow!

Lately, I feel like my classmates and I are being fired with one test after another. And we are not even done with our assignmnents!! (In fact, I am completing one now! And then I am gonna try to do another. God knows when I am gonna sleep! My record is falling! Lol.) -Sigh- We are all gonna be real psychos after all these.

Oh yeah, on Sunday, the first Formula One race of this season is taking place in Australia and I will be covering all the races on my blog this season. For for those of you who just loves Formula One and do not have a source to watch it, look out for my posts on the stats, etc and also post race entries.

And there is no club soccer this weekend. All are off for international duty. World Cup qualifying.

UEFA Champions' League Quarterfinals and Semifinals Draw

Yesterday in Nyon, the draw for the quarterfinals and semifinals for this season's UEFA Champions. League took place. As I have mentioned earlier, the remaining 8 clubs are:
1) Arsenal (Eng)
2) Barcelona (Spa)
3) Bayern Munich (Ger)
4) Chelsea (Eng)
5) Liverpool (Eng)
6) Manchester United (Eng)
7) Porto (Por)
8) Vilarreal (Spa)

With 4 English clubs heading into the quaterfinals yet again, chances of having an all English club semifinals was yet again present. However, bear in mind that there are no more country protection once reaching the quarterfinals. So chances of 2 English teams meeting each other also present.

So anyway, long story short, the result of the draw is as follows:
Quarterfinal 1: Manchester United vs Porto
Quarterfinal 2: Villarreal vs Arsenal
Quarterfinal 3: Liverpool vs Chelsea
Quarterfinal 4: Barcelona vs Bayern Munich

Semifinal 1: Quarterfinal 1 vs Quarterfinal 2
Semifinal 2: Quarterfinal 3 vs Quarterfinal 4

So I guess there are a few good games here. Manchester United has fairly easy draws while Liverpool and Chelsea will face each other yet again. This is the 5th consecutive time that they have met in the UEFA Champions' League. Last season saw Chelsea kicking Liverpool out. And 2 giant killers (Barca and Bayern) in the previous round will play each other. And semifinal 2 looks really good no matter who plays.

As for Arsenal, I think facing Villarreal wouldn't be too tough. They do not have to travel far and they have recently met in the semifinals, which Arsenal prevailed. It would be nice though to see former Arsenal midfielder, Robert Pires once again.

And just briefly, in tennis, Maria Sharapova came back to play in a doubles match recently but was defeated. It was her first competitive match this year. Hopefully, she will be able to compete later this year in the French Open. Roland Garros is the only Grand Slam she has yet to conquer. Meanwhile, Novak Djokovic has been losing again and again this year.

Now, in Formula One, there are some significant changes of rules this year. Perhaps the most talked about is the change of way in determining the champion. Previously, the champion was determined with the champion being the driver who has the most points. However, the FIA decided to change the system, awarding the driver with the most wins to take the crown. The runner up will be determined by the points systems. The awarding of the constructors' title also remained unchanged. Nonetheless, the change of the system has already been criticised by many including 7 times world champion, Michael Schumacher who said that it is not logic to have someone in second place of the drivers' standings bagging the crown just because he had win more races. Defending champion, Lewis Hamilton had also criticised the system, saying it is unfair to award the crown to the one who wins the most as they should be looking at consistency, meaning, it doesn't matter if he finishes first or third. So long as he finished top in the drivers' standings. Anyway, the outcome of this rule will be seen at the end of the season. For now, during all the testings, Ferrari, Renault, BMW Sauber and Brawn GP looks strong will McLaren are struggling. The new F1 season will start this March 29th at Albert Park, Australia.

A Very Tiring Yet Interesting And Fun Day

My day started off with really good news as early as 12.01a.m. (see previous blog entry for details). Then continued studying silly TITAS. Memorising actually. Slept at 2a.m. after chatting with a few friends in Hui Ling's room. They even 'interviewed' me regarding some stuffs. Woke up at 6a.m.. My roommate was shocked to see me awake so early. I normally sleep til around 9a.m. and never wake up that early since the orientation week! Lol. Anyway, did more memorising and it paid off really well. Think I aced my TITAS. Really happy to have done so. Got back and had lunch. Chicken yet again. 9 meals with chicken in 10 days. What a record! Lol. Then I took a nap to catch up with my sleep til about 4p.m.. Afterwhich I went to meet up with my lecturer and it was really nice talking to him. I was kinda nervous and uncomfortable at first but as the conversation went on, it felt really good to talk to him. Best lecturer of the semester to me. Anyway, got back at 6p.m. and persuaded my friends to play futsal. We had 8 players today. It was really fun. Sya and Fatanah joined us for the first time since the tournament and Ain came as well. It was just SO MUCH FUN. Made lots of noise as well. Haha. Won 3-1 too! Lol. After cleaning myself up, went to get dinner with my 9 close friends. Was kinda roudy but who cares. Lol. Laugh A LOT again with Crabp and May Peng. But not as much as last night (Crabp, Siew Fen, Soo Chen, May Peng and I had Laughing McDonald's Meal last night and laughed til we almost puke!). Anyway, that was my day today. It was really tiring but it was just SO MUCH FUN.

On another note, in the world of sports, Britain's Lewis Hamilton is officially the youngest Formula One driver to have won the Drivers' World Championship. Was a bit lucky if you asked me. Won it in the last lap. Felipe Massa led the pack for most of the race but Lewis kinda snatched fifth place in the very last lap to beat Felipe by a single point in the final standings. So the drivers' title goes to McLaren's Lewis Hamilton while the constructors' title goes to Ferrari. Defending champion, Kimi Raikonnen, finished fourth in the overal standings.

In the Barclay's Premier League, Arsenal slipped to their third defeat of the season when they lost to newly promoted Stoke City 2-1. It's hard to see where they'll finish the season now. They only lost 3 matches the whole of last season and already the same amount in 11 matches this season. The defeat also saw them pushed down to fourth behind Manchester United who defeated Hull City 4-3. Chelsea also leap-frog Liverpool after they smashed Sunderland 5-0 while The Reds lost to Tottenham 2-1.

Well, that's a wrap!

Formula One Update

Well, recently, Formula One supremo, Bernie Eccelstone proposed an idea to standardise all engines in Formula One. Today, Ferrari has stepped up and said that they might pulled out from the sport if that rule stays. This is because they are it in for the competition and it would be meaningless if all engines are standardised.

In other news, Michael Schumacher said that his record of 7 Formula One world championship is there to be beaten and that Lewis Hamilton leads the way. He admits that Lewis possesses great talent and he is not surprise if he betters his record someday.

That is all. To me, standardised engines would be good. This is because it would allow the weaker and poorer teams to compete with the rich ones like Ferrari, McLaren, etc and that it would save cost. Besides, the winners of races then would be based purely on talent and that would be great to watch. But it would be sad to me if the rule stays and Ferrari leaves 'cause then it would leave me without any reason to continue watching the sport. -Sigh-
